Every year, more than one and a half million heart attacks occur, with over 20% of victims dying before reaching the hospital. Cardiac arrest is rapidly becoming one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide.
Time is critical during cardiac arrest. Brain damage begins within four to six minutes, and after 10 minutes, irreversible injury makes resuscitation nearly impossible.
Statistics show that the sooner CPR is administered, the greater the chances of survival. Providing assistance within four minutes can double survival rates. Those few minutes can truly make the difference between life and death.

The first step in performing CPR is to assess the scene for safety and then check the victim for responsiveness. Gently shake the person and ask loudly, “Are you OK?” If the individual responds, CPR is not required. At this point, introduce yourself and call 10177 for assistance. If the person is unresponsive, not breathing or only gasping, has no pulse, or shows signs of a stroke or heart attack, call 10177 immediately and begin the CABs of CPR: C – Compressions A – Airway B – Breaths
